Scale Construction: Building Scales from Patterns

A scale is an ordered sequence of notes within one octave, built from a specific pattern of whole steps (W = 2 semitones) and half steps (H = 1 semitone). The pattern determines the scale's character. The major scale follows W-W-H-W-W-W-H — seven steps that produce the bright, resolved sound behind most Western music.

The natural minor scale (W-H-W-W-H-W-W) lowers the 3rd, 6th, and 7th degrees of the major scale, creating a darker, more introspective quality. The major pentatonic (W-W-W+H-W-W+H) removes the half steps entirely, producing a universally pleasing five-note scale used across folk, pop, and country. The blues scale adds a tritone "blue note" to the minor pentatonic, creating the signature tension of blues and rock.

Every scale is defined by its interval pattern — once you memorize the W/H formula, you can build any scale from any root note.
