Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use an online metronome for practice?

Set your BPM using the slider or type a number, select your time signature and subdivision, then press play. The ChordLookup metronome provides both audio clicks and a visual beat indicator so you can practice in time.

What BPM should I start practicing at?

For chord practice, start at 60-80 BPM where you can play cleanly and switch chords on beat 1. Increase by 5-10 BPM once you are comfortable. Speed follows accuracy, not the other way around.

What are metronome subdivisions?

Subdivisions divide each beat into smaller units. Quarter notes (1 click per beat), eighth notes (2 clicks), triplets (3 clicks), and sixteenth notes (4 clicks). Practicing with subdivisions improves your internal timing.

What time signatures does the metronome support?

The metronome supports 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, and 7/8 time signatures. Each emphasizes the downbeat so you always know where beat 1 falls.

How do I find the tempo of a song?

Switch to the Tap Tempo tab and tap the button on each beat. After 4-8 taps you get an accurate BPM reading with the matching Italian tempo marking (Allegro, Andante, etc.). The detected tempo carries over to the metronome.

How do I convert BPM to delay times?

Switch to the Tempo Calc tab. It converts your BPM to milliseconds for delays, reverbs, LFO rates, and song length planning. Click any value to copy it for your DAW or plugin.
