Questions
How do I plan a key change in my song?
Enter your current key and target key in the Key Change Planner. It finds shared pivot chords between the two keys and suggests transition routes that make the modulation sound smooth and intentional.
What is a pivot chord?
A pivot chord exists naturally in both your current key and the target key. Playing a pivot chord lets you smoothly transition because the listener perceives it in the first key, then reinterprets it in the new key.
What makes a smooth key change?
Smooth modulations use pivot chords, stepwise key movement (changing by one sharp or flat), or direct dominant approach (V7 of the new key). The planner evaluates each option and ranks them by smoothness.
Can I modulate to a distant key?
Yes, though distant key changes (more than two sharps/flats apart) typically require an intermediate key or an abrupt modulation for dramatic effect. The planner shows both gradual and direct routes.
