Circle of Fifths

The circle of fifths is a diagram arranging all 12 pitches in a circle where each adjacent pitch is a perfect fifth apart. It shows key relationships, the number of sharps or flats in each key, and is essential for understanding modulation and harmony.

Adjacent keys on the circle share six of seven notes, making transitions between them smooth. The Circle of Fifths tool shows modulation routes, pivot chords (shared between two keys), and cadence points for planning key changes.

Pivot chords are chords that exist naturally in both your current key and your target key. They provide a smooth transition point for modulating between keys. The tool highlights these shared chords for any pair of keys.

Moving clockwise around the circle gives you the V-I resolution pattern that underpins most Western harmony. Counterclockwise movement creates IV-I plagal cadences. Understanding the circle helps you create stronger, more intentional progressions.
