How to Read Keyboard Diagrams

Part of thePiano Fundamentalsguided course.

A keyboard diagram is a visual representation of which keys to press on a piano. The diagram shows a portion of the keyboard as if you were sitting in front of it: a row of white keys with black keys set above and between them in their familiar two-and-three grouping.

White keys are the natural notes (C, D, E, F, G, A, B). Black keys are the sharps and flats, grouped in pairs (C♯/D♭ and D♯/E♭) and triples (F♯/G♭, G♯/A♭, A♯/B♭). On the interactive diagrams in this tool, chord tones appear as highlighted, colored keys — the root is usually shown in one color and the other chord tones in another, so you can see at a glance which keys form the chord. groups repeat every twelve semitones, so the same chord shape you learn around middle C reappears identically up and down the entire keyboard.

Because every key is laid out in a single linear line of semitones, a keyboard diagram is arguably the most direct of all instrument diagrams — there is no string numbering, no fret position, and no fingering dot to decode. The highlighted key is the note you play. This is one reason piano is the default instrument for teaching theory: the distance between any two notes is visible as physical distance on the keyboard, with adjacent keys always one semitone apart.

Keyboard diagrams are one of three notation systems every working pianist meets. The other two are chord symbols (the shorthand like Cmaj7 or Am7 you see on lead sheets) and the grand staff (standard music notation with treble and bass clefs). Diagrams are the fastest for seeing which keys to press; symbols are the fastest for harmonic communication; the staff is the fastest for exact rhythm and pitch sequence. See the Reading Chord Symbols lesson for the symbol system.
