Build Your First Chord Progression

Now it is your turn. Every major key has 7 diatonic chords — one built on each note of the scale. These 7 chords are the raw material for thousands of songs. Pick a key, choose 2–4 chords from the diatonic set, and hear how they sound together.

The most important progressions use just 3 or 4 chords. The I–V–vi–IV pattern alone appears in hundreds of hit songs. Try starting with the I chord (the home chord), adding the V (the tension), and returning to I (the resolution). Then experiment with different combinations.

Pay attention to how each chord change feels. Some transitions sound smooth and natural (like IV to V), others create surprise or tension (like I to vi). Learning to hear these relationships is the foundation of playing by ear and writing your own songs.
