Modes: Seven Flavors of the Major Scale

Modes are seven different scales hidden inside the same set of notes. Play C major from C to C and you hear Ionian (the major scale). Play the same seven notes from D to D and you hear Dorian — a minor scale with a raised 6th that sounds soulful and jazzy. Same notes, completely different character, just from starting on a different degree.

The seven modes are Ionian (major), Dorian (minor with raised 6th), Phrygian (minor with flattened 2nd — Spanish and Middle Eastern flavor), Lydian (major with raised 4th — dreamy and floating), Mixolydian (major with flattened 7th — bluesy dominant sound), Aeolian (natural minor), and Locrian (diminished — unstable, rarely used as a tonic).

Modes are essential for improvisation. Over a major chord, try Lydian for a brighter sound or Mixolydian for blues. Over minor, Dorian is more uplifting than Aeolian.
