Minor Scales: Natural, Harmonic, and Melodic

scales create the darker, more emotional side of music. There are three main types, each with a distinct character. The (Aeolian mode) follows W-H-W-W-H-W-W — the same notes as its relative starting from the sixth degree. A natural minor uses all the same notes as C major but starts on A, producing a completely different emotional quality.

The raises the 7th degree by one semitone, creating a leading tone that pulls strongly back to the root. This produces the exotic-sounding between the 6th and 7th degrees — a signature sound in classical, metal, and Middle Eastern music. The melodic minor raises both the 6th and 7th degrees ascending (for smoother melodies) but reverts to natural minor descending.

Understanding these three variants unlocks a huge range of expressive possibilities. Jazz and neo-soul musicians use the as a standalone scale (not just for ascending melodies). Classical composers exploit the harmonic minor for dramatic tension. Use the interactive widget below to hear the difference between all three from any root.
