Progressive Ear Training Course

A guided six-stage path that takes you from single intervals to full chord-progressions-by-ear. Each stage builds on the prior one and links to chordlookup.com's interactive ear-training tools.

    Single Intervals

    Hear two notes and name the distance between them in Melodic Ear Training (Intervals). The foundational skill that every later stage builds on.

    Goal: Identify all 12 chromatic intervals (m2 → P8) with at least 80% accuracy.

  2. Stage 2Locked· 20 min· Target 70%

    Melodic Phrases

    Same Melodic Ear Training tool as stage 1, opened on the Phrase tab. Recognize short sequences of intervals played in succession.

    Goal: Transcribe 3- and 4-note phrases with at least 70% of the notes correct.

  3. Stage 3Locked· 15 min· Target 80%

    Triad Quality

    Hear a three-note chord and identify whether it is major, minor, diminished, or augmented.

    Goal: Distinguish all four triad qualities with at least 80% accuracy.

    Seventh Chord Quality

    Extend triad recognition to four-note seventh chords: maj7, dom7, m7, m7b5, dim7.

    Goal: Identify the five common seventh-chord qualities with at least 70% accuracy.

    Chord Inversions

    Hear which note of a chord is in the bass. Inversions are the key to recognizing voicings by ear.

    Goal: Identify root position vs first and second inversions with at least 70% accuracy.

    Short Progressions

    Listen to a 2- to 4-chord progression and identify the Roman numeral pattern. The synthesis step that bridges ear training with real music.

    Goal: Recognize I–V–vi–IV and common jazz turnarounds by ear.

Is the ear training course free?

Yes. Every stage of the course and every ear training tool it links to is completely free, with no sign-up required.

How long does the ear training course take?

The course is self-paced. Most learners spend roughly 10 to 25 minutes per stage across six stages, with two to four weeks of regular practice per stage before moving on.

Do I need to complete the stages in order?

Yes. Each stage unlocks when the prior stage is marked complete, because every stage builds on the listening skill trained by the one before it. You can always revisit a completed stage to keep practicing.
